First Aid and Common Emergencies: Freak accident with paper shredder - use caution!

Subject: SERIOUS freak accident

Hi all,
Please crosspost this widely so this won't happen to another dog.
A friend of mine was using her paper shredder (which her husband had
just oiled) and her dog ran over and tried to lick the blade right
after she fed a sheet into it. Before she even realized what was
happening, he had shredded his tongue. Then when he tried to pull it
out, he ripped the flesh that holds it to the bottom of his mouth. He
lost a small amount of tongue, and it has so many stitches in it she
can't count them all. It is so swollen it won't fit in his mouth and
she has to give him baby food and droppers of water. While the vet
thought the prognosis would be good, there is still the chance of
infection setting in or parts of the tongue dying and needing
removal. They did say they had never seen this before. She is beside
herself and although she hasn't even mentioned it, I am sure the
surgery at the emergency vet was pricey. Thanks in advance
for sending this message along.
