Help Pet Conquer Fear of Loud Noises
Does your dog freak out when the youngsters set off firecrackers on
the Fourth of July? Does a thunderstorm send him running into bed
with you? Many dogs bark, cower or run away when they're afraid of
loud noises, but that may not be the best for you or your pooch.
Dog experts offer some tips on dealing with your scaredy-dog.
Give your dog a safe place to hide. It can be under the bed, a room
away from the noise, the basement, anywhere it feels secure. Run a
radio or small fan in the room to create a distracting noise. Make
sure your dog has an escape route.
Distract your dog with an activity it enjoys. Play a game of fetch or
practice obedience training. Be sure to offer rewards for following
commands.
Try to desensitize your dog to the frightening noise. It takes some
preparation on your part, but it can work. Make a tape recording of
whatever noise scares your dog. At first, play it at a low volume
while you do your normal routine, so your dog doesn't get frightened.
Gradually increase the volume until your dog gets accustomed to it.
If your dog acts afraid, turn the tape off and go back to a lower
volume.
Don't reward or punish your dog for showing fear. Too much
reassurance might reinforce fearful behavior, and punishment will
make it even more afraid.
If none of these methods work, consult your veterinarian.
