Animal Protection: Letter to send to people regarding adoptions on Internet

Letter to send to people regarding adoptions on Internet

I'm passing this along in case anyone would like to use it. Whenever
I see someone running a free to good home posting on the net, I send
them the following letter. The links at the bottom of the letter are
links to two pages on my own site, but feel free to change the links
to any site you prefer that provides information.

Dear ____________:

I saw your posting for [type of animal] at [where you saw posting].

It is important to make you aware that there are unscrupulous people
who operate in rings to collect cats, dogs and other animals for the
purpose of selling them to labs for research, or selling them for
bait in dog fights or as food for other animals. There have also been
many cases of people adopting animals for the sole purpose of abuse
or for ritual sacrifice. The danger is that these people appear to be
animal lovers and can easily fool you, sometimes bringing along
children to portray a "perfect family" image. Therefore, it is
important to check all references and do a home check BEFORE
releasing an animal into a stranger's care. Follow-up home checks are
also necessary.
