Dogs unattended in air conditioned cars

This was just posted to the NJ-Agility list. Never leave your dog in
the car with the air conditioner on and the windows closed -- not
even for 5 mintues. Please pass along.

Subject: Ch Wildfre Sweet Revenge January 2004 - August 2006

Last night around 5 p.m. I received one of the most difficult phone
calls I have ever endured.

My bitch Treya AKA Ch Wildfire Sweet Revenge, died tragically in my
handler's truck.

The news has come to me and my family as a tremendous shock and loss
of one of the finest bitches we have ever bred, owned and loved.
Sadly she died in our handler's truck who had broken a circuit in the
generator, and all nine dogs in her truck passed away from loss of
air circulation.

I felt the need to share it with you today, as the loss is so
profound and so fresh in my mind,

Treya was a very special girl. She had the heart of many, especially
working BC trainers, who loved her athleticism and drive for life. My
children simply loved her because she was part of our family.

Treya was one of those once in a lifetime dogs, that come into your
life and you feel blessed to have them.

I wanted to send this letter out as a tribute to my girl. My
beautiful sweet red girl who I just saw last week, and thought to
myself as my handler Jamie Orr ran her around the ring... "How did I
get so lucky to have this girl...." Now I feel so lost WITHOUT this
girl.

I would like to remind all of you, how important it is to never leave
your dogs out in excessive heat, to never leave your car running with
the air on, and your dogs inside, while you run to the store,
thinking they will be fine...if your car stops, their air stops....

Remind your dogs at home how special they are...this tragedy has made
me realize the important of the everyday hug and love to your dogs....

I will forever miss Treya. She was one of the most versatile
conformation BC in the states. She was just ranked #3 in Eukanuba
points system for Border Collies...she was an amazing obedience dog,
talented herding dog, and a lovely home girl.

Thank you all for taking the time to read this, and remember to value
every moment you have with your dogs...I know from this horrific
loss...how there are no guarantees.

To all that loved Treya, I want to thank you for your support. Her
loss is so tragic.

In closing, I want to dedicated this letter to Treya, who will
forever missed.

Rest in peace little girl...We miss you so much.

Note: There are 2 separate stories about police dogs dying in hot
cars during this current heat wave. In both cases, the cars were left
running with the air conditioner on, and in both cases, the cars
stalled and the dogs died from the heat.

Police Dog Dies After Being Left In A Hot Car
(KUTV) SALT LAKE CITY A police dog inside a Utah Highway Patrol car
for six hours collapsed and later died when the air conditioner
failed in extreme heat.

Reggie, a 9-year-old Belgian Malinois with a nose for finding drugs,
was put in an ice bath and rushed to a veterinarian Sunday night but
didn't survive.

"As you can imagine, there are a couple of people who are broken up,"
Trooper Jeff Nigbur said Tuesday. "He was a hard worker and had some
good dope finds."

Reggie and his handler were on weekend patrol near Interstate 70. The
dog was given food and water and placed in the patrol car outside a
motel with a window open 4 inches and the air conditioner on, Lt.
Chris Simmons told the Deseret Morning News.

At some point, the air conditioner failed and instead blasted warm
air.

"There was antifreeze all over the parking lot. Something happened to
the car, and we lost the coolant," Capt. Jeff Graviet said.

Trooper Brad Zeeman, who was asleep at the motel, was awakened when
someone reported Reggie struggling in the car around 4 p.m.

The Utah Highway Patrol typically keeps dogs inside climate-
controlled vehicles rather than ask if an animal can stay in a room,
Graviet said.

"In years past, we've had issues with motels," he said. "We came up
with a program to have the kennel in the car. It's worked for several
years. We've never had a problem."

The temperature in the area was 100 degrees or higher, Graviet said.

Zeeman had not activated a system that opens all windows and sounds
the horn when the inside temperature exceeds 80 degrees, Graviet said.

Reggie had hundreds of drug finds, including 100 pounds of marijuana
in the gas tank of a truck in 2002. He once tracked down a man who
had assaulted a police officer and fled into the hills of Tooele.

OCEAN VIEW, Del. -- Authorities are calling the death of an Ocean
View police dog an accident.

The dog's handler left his dog in a police cruiser outside the
station with the engine running and air conditioner on. But the car
stalled. When the handler returned, the dog was dead.

Ocean View police Sgt. Heath Hall said the dog -- Karo -- was a hard
worker who helped make many arrests.

He said Karo's sudden death was a shock.
