Pets With Disabilities Rescue
Pets with Disabilities is an all volunteer, non-profit 501(c)(3) organization
dedicated to helping and promoting the adoption of physically disabled
animals into great homes. All donations are tax deductible to the extent
permissible by law. Contact your tax adviser. Pets with Disabilities is an
officially recognized Maryland Non-Profit Organization.
Joyce Darrell and her husband Michael Dickerson founded the Pets with
Disabilities organization. The story of the dogs, Duke and Misty has
reached thousands of people worldwide and has helped raise awareness
about disabled pets. The organization and website have provided
support and information to people whose pets suffer from birth defects
or have become disabled due to illness or injury. Pets with Disabilities
along with Deweys Wheelchairs for Dogs have funded the purchase of
many wheelchairs for homeless pets in need. Pets with Disabilities has
been instrumental in helping shelters place their disabled animals into
loving and caring homes. We have given a voice to and hope for disabled
animals!
Duke, the founding dog of Pets with Disabilities, broke his back, while
puppy playing. Euthanasia was not an option, so we elected to get Duke
a wheelchair and to give him a job to help other dogs and cats find
homes that are disabled. He has become a great spokesdog for his cause!
Misty was born with no hip sockets. As a puppy she was rescued from
the streets of Harrison, NY. Misty was the shelter mutt for over five years
at the Westchester County Humane Society. She finally found her forever
home with Pets with Disabilities.
Disabled animals show a special kind of devoted loyalty to their caregivers
so if you have room in home and in your heart adopt a disabled animal, it
just might be the best pet you will ever have.
We are looking for candidates for our Pets with Disabilities 2009 calendar.
Please send your photos to Joyce. Photos must be clear, with holiday or
seasonal themes. Please provide your pet's name, guardians' names,
description of pet's disability and address.
Be a Pets with Disabilities Angel!
All the dogs at Pets with Disabilities, have special needs, otherwise they
would not be here. In today's society dogs and cats can no longer get
sick, old or physically disabled. Whether they were abandoned, rejected
or someone's life changed and they no longer fit in, they are counting on
us to help them transition to a new life. They will either stay with us, or
they will be rehomed carefully to the right people or families. So if you
see a dog in our rescue that tugs out your heart please become his or
her angel.
Thank you.
